The Chaplain/Director for Chapel Programming and Preaching serves as a shepherd who provides support in guiding the spiritual life and formation for the undergraduate community along with the other full time Campus Pastors. This pastoral position has the primary role of helping communicate the gospel and formational practices through preaching and providing opportunities for the undergraduate community to grow in their Christian faith. This pastor will also collaborate regularly with faculty and staff as it relates to the spiritual formation of undergraduate students. Expertise and experience in both multiethnic and gender specific spiritual formation in the milieu of higher education will be critical. Responsibilities will also include interaction with students through pastoral care and counseling.
Demonstrate the priority of personal spiritual renewal through the regular practice of spiritual disciplines
Leadership with the VP for Spiritual Development planning, organizing and implementing the Chapel programming in coordination with Chapel Planning team
Oversight and management of the chaplain/chapel budget
Oversee stated goals and assessment process
Collaborate with other Campus Pastors offering support for various Spiritual Development programming
Provide supervision and mentoring for the ASB Spiritual Life Director and Chapel Intern
Intentionally collaborate with PLNU’s Chief Diversity Officer and the Director for the Multicultural Center to be about the work of racial reconciliation on campus from a Biblical and theological perspective
Assist in building bridges to faculty and staff through relationships, collaborations and engagement in larger University programming
Ability to effectively create opportunities for smaller gatherings of students; retreats, forums, book clubs, etc. as needed
Assist VP for Spiritual Development in developing spiritual care support for Graduate and CEL students
Passion for students, vision and commitment to help intentionally develop the spiritual climate of the campus
Report to Vice President for Spiritual Development
Work within the shared vision of the Pastoral Team which also includes, the Director/Campus Pastor of Community Ministries, the Director/Campus Pastor of Worship Arts, The Director/Campus Pastor for International Ministries, the Associate Director/Campus Pastor for International Ministries and the Director/Campus Pastor for Discipleship
Provide pastoral counseling and spiritual guidance to undergraduate students
Be available to speak and teach in a variety of settings and with a variety of groups
Work closely with all areas of Student Development in collaborative programming and ministry
Maintain daily interaction with students by appointments and sustain a “presence” on campus by attending key events
Preach in the undergraduate chapel (various settings) approximately 6-9 times a semester
Oversight of chapel assistant and the details of speaker invitations and follow up, set up of communion, prayer stations, etc.
Maintain a pastoral presence/role in chapel through introductions and support at various chapel services
Available to host chapel speakers
Serve as a member of the Chapel Planning Committee
Collaborate with Student Development staff members who oversee chapel attendance (scanning, implementation of policy, etc.)
Performs other responsibilities related to job description as assigned by Vice President for Spiritual Development
Ability to encourage a range of spiritual and intellectual styles and develop leaders to minister to undergraduate students
Ability to provide pastoral care where needed for faculty and staff
Knowledge of procedures and theory in the field of spiritual care and pastoral counseling
Ability to intimately understand and work cooperatively with undergraduate students, faculty, staff, administrators, board members, and parents of students
Ability and desire to reach out to all students, especially those who are disenfranchised
Excellent oral and written communication skills, preference is for bi-lingual ability
Ability to navigate through social media using current internet applications
Competent organizational, managerial and problem solving skills with a variety of tasks and demands
Leadership, initiative, and relationship building ability
Master’s degree, Doctorate preferred in Theology, Preaching, Biblical Studies, Christian Ed. or related field
Licensed and/or ordained minister in the Wesleyan/Holiness tradition (Church of the Nazarene preferred).
Eight – ten years as a professional in campus ministries or church ministry.
A committed evangelical Christian and one who embraces the Wesleyan tradition and a call to holy living with evidence of fruitful living demonstrated in love, grace and peace.
Experience in speaking and teaching in a variety of settings both large and small (must provide with application a video or website of a sermon preached in a context of 500+ people)
Ability to maintain focus and work effectively in a fast paced environment with frequent interruptions
Possess a strong intercultural competence with the ability to pastor theologically, ethnically, and culturally diverse students
Ability to learn procedures, retain information, and present one’s self in a professional manner that reflects the goals and mission of PLNU
Agreement with the purpose, goals and beliefs of PLNU in providing a Christian-based higher education for its students
Proficient in Google Apps., Microsoft Office, Word and Excel
The work is primarily sedentary and may require sitting for extended periods of time. Use of computer equipment: computer keyboard, mouse, and monitor. Vision to read documents, e-mail and other correspondence, and reports on paper and computer monitor. Hearing and speaking to communicate effectively with others in person and by phone. Will also stand, stoop, push, pull, and lift up to 10 lbs throughout the day.
